FIGURE SCULPTURE
Read Morein appreciation for the gift of Fire This sculpture of the Greek Titan Prometheus personifies the hard work and sacrifice made by teachers and mentors everywhere who strive to enlighten, inspire, educate and empower their students, and by doing so improve the world in which we live. To me Prometheus is a symbol of the finest of these educators. According to the myth, he bestowed upon us some of the fire of understanding that theretofore had only been possessed by the gods. For his gift to mortals Prometheus was sentenced by the jealous Zeus to be chained to a Caucasus mountain top and tortured daily. My sculpture depicts the moment that the hero Heracles released Prometheus lifting him up, as we should recognize, celebrate and even memorialize all heroes who sacrifice to bring the fire of understanding to humanity. One such hero was English teacher Paul Torak of Edgemont High School in Scarsdale, NY. whose dedication to his students inspired the commission of this sculpture fifty years ago.
